INTERVIEW | Tim on ABC – Afternoon Briefing

Tim Buckley, CEO of Climate Energy Finance, says Australia should welcome data centre investment linked to AI and renewables, but only if it serves the national interest.

Speaking on Afternoon Briefing, he pointed to the US, where data centres are driving sharp rises in electricity prices and account for half of projected demand growth. Without clear rules and public interest tests, Australia, particularly Sydney and Melbourne, could face similar pressures.

He said most operators support clearer guidelines, but warned that without proper planning around power and water infrastructure, higher energy costs and community backlash could follow.
