Tim Buckley, founder of Clean Energy Finance, argues that Whyalla’s steelworks must shift quickly to renewable energy rather than rely on gas, which he says would require expensive new pipelines and create long-term stranded assets. His report urges immediate “no-regrets” actions: expand magnetite mining, build additional renewable energy and firming infrastructure, construct an electric arc furnace, and grow steel fabrication. He recommends delaying large-scale green hydrogen until it is proven elsewhere. Buckley also criticises government support for new gas fields and claims BlueScope is seeking major subsidies whilst downplaying existing global examples of low-emissions steelmaking.
