INTERVIEW | Tim Buckley on ABC Illawarra

Tim Buckley, Director of Climate Energy Finance, told ABC Illawarra that Australia’s manufacturing sector is in serious decline due to high gas prices driven by what he called a “gas cartel.” He said both major parties have failed to regulate the industry and called for a domestic gas reservation scheme in eastern Australia, similar to Western Australia’s, to secure affordable gas for local manufacturers.

Tim Buckley argued there is no genuine gas shortage, noting that production has tripled over the past decade while demand has fallen. He criticised major gas users such as BlueScope Steel for weak emissions targets, saying cleaner technologies could cut emissions by up to 60% within five years. He urged the government to act in the national and climate interest to protect jobs and strengthen Australian industry.
