Tim Buckley highlights the immense opportunity and risk for Australia in the global push for green steel. As the world’s largest exporter of iron ore, Australia is deeply tied to China, which produces half of global steel and contributes up to 9% of global emissions. China is serious about decarbonising and could turn to Brazil or Guinea for cleaner iron ore if Australia doesn’t act. Buckley stresses the need to work with China on green steel technology, warning that up to $60 billion annually in exports is at risk. However, value-adding could boost exports to $250 billion a year in a decarbonised future.
