INTERVIEW | ABC North and West SA Breakfast: Report Urges Renewables for Whyalla Steelworks

A new report on transforming and decarbonising the Whyalla steelworks argues that South Australia should prioritise renewable energy and future hydrogen capability over locking in expensive, high-emission gas. Tim Buckley of Climate Energy Finance says gas would cut emissions only temporarily while requiring costly new pipeline infrastructure that risks becoming a stranded asset. Although hydrogen remains unproven at scale, global projects are advancing and costs are expected to fall within five to ten years. The report urges immediate steps—expanding renewable capacity, developing magnetite resources and installing an electric arc furnace—to modernise Whyalla while avoiding further delays during administration.
