EVENT | Tim speaks at Smart Energy Council Perth Forum

From Smart Energy Council LinkedIn:

This week, we hosted what we believe is a landmark discussion in our region’s energy transition journey – The Future of Net Zero in Asia: Clean Commodities, CBAM and the Green Industrial Shift.

We were privileged to hear from three of the most insightful minds working at the frontier of this transformation: Tim Buckley from Climate Energy Finance, Oliver Yates from Gaw Capital, and Isaac Hinton from InterContinental Energy. With our WA General Manager Charlie Caruso guiding the conversation, we explored the economic and policy imperatives facing Australia and the region as we grapple with the need to decarbonise our economies.

🎤 Charlie opened the session with a hard truth: the over-engineered interventions we see today in the Australian energy market stem from our failure to implement a clear, economy-wide price on carbon. That absence has created uncertainty – and with it, inefficiency.

🎤 Isaac provided a powerful update on Intercontinental Energy’s three major projects, underscoring how strong, consistent government policy is essential to bringing these nation-building ventures to life. It’s a reminder that scale and ambition must be matched with clarity and support from our institutions.

🎤 Oliver made a compelling case for Clean Commodity Trading – an idea that, if embraced, could underpin long-term offtake agreements for green commodities and help Australian projects compete on a global stage. His vision aligns with what we hear repeatedly from our Council members: we need financial innovation that mirrors our technological ambition.

🎤 Tim came with a preview of his upcoming report, A Price on Carbon: Building Towards an Asian CBAM. His message was clear and sobering: a global carbon price is coming, whether we like it or not. The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is just the start. Australia – and our trading partners in Asia – need to respond, or risk being left behind.

What struck us most was the calibre of attendees. The room was filled with leaders from across the green hydrogen and critical minerals sectors – people who aren’t just talking about change, but building it.

We are so proud to convene forums like this – spaces where policy, finance and project delivery converge. And this is just the beginning.

We’ll continue to lead, to ask the hard questions, and to ensure Australia has a seat at the table as the region defines the future of clean industry.
